University of Tsukuba - JAPANThe University of Tsukuba, founded in October 1973, is one of Japan’s leading comprehensive universities. Three Nobel Prize laureates have served as either president or faculty. The University of Tsukuba aims to establish free exchange and close relationship in both basic and applied sciences with educational and research organizations and academic communities in Japan and overseas. The university also exchanges students, staff, and faculty members with universities overseas based on exchange agreements and hire foreign teachers, besides actively accepting international students. More details: http://www.tsukuba.ac.jp/english University of Sherbrooke, Centre seve - CANADAThe mission statement of the Centre SÈVE of the University of Sherbrooke is to disseminate and transfer new expertise and effective tools, to provide innovative technologies and strategies to improve crop productivity and to offer an added value to agricultural products in context requiring ecosystem sustainability and food safety. The second major goal of Centre SÈVE is to contribute to the training of highly qualified personnel. The Centre SÈVE gathers eleven professors and scientists from Université de Sherbrooke who collaborate with 40 collegues from Université Laval, Université de Montreal, McGill University, Université du Québec in Trois-Rivières, Institut de Recherche et de Développement en Agroenvironnement and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. In bringing together these vital forces in plant science, Centre SÈVE becomes the first research centre in Quebec in this sector. The Centre also represents a linkage between scientists, users (producers and industries), policy makers and the public. More details: http://www.usherbrooke.ca Istituto Agronomico Mediterraneo di Bari (IAMb) - ITALYIAMB is the Italian seat of CIHEAM, the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, created in 1962. CIHEAM Bari is a Centre for post-graduate training, applied scientific research and design of in loco partnership actions within the framework of international research and cooperation programmes. CIHEAM Bari enjoys the privileges of extra-territoriality granted to international organizations by the Republic of Italy, since the year 2000. In line with CIHEAM’s Action Plan 2025 for the Mediterranean (CAPMED 2025), CIHEAM Bari is involved in a number of activities which provide a platform for institutions and organizations wishing to cooperate across the Mediterranean area. Furthermore, the experience gained may often be transferred to other regions of the world. Special attention is paid to the involvement of CIHEAM Bari Alumni, especially in their countries of origin. Every year, around 100 students coming from more than 20 different countries attend Master courses as well asshort training courses at IAMB. Cooperation and research actions concern important issues such as food security, poverty alleviation, capacity building at institutional level, more efficient use of natural resources, improvement of agricultural production and productivity, promotion of organic farming, development of sustainable food systems, resilience to climate change, integrated management of coastal areas, gender empowerment, fisheries and aquaculture, etc. The networking activities conducted by CIHEAM Bari involve hundreds of institutions located in several countries, consolidating professional contacts, institutional and multi-stakeholder partnerships, country-to-country relationships and joint initiatives with the private sector. This paves the way to self-generating exchange of information, technical and professional expertise, publications, innovative research and educational activities, conferences and seminars, harmonization of methodological guidelines, etc. IAMB teaching staff is composed of 30 permanent teachers-researchers, in addition to a Network of 150 international visiting professors. UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA PORTUGUESA – CENTRO REGIONAL DO PORTO, ESCOLA SUPERIOR DE BIOTECNOLOGIA (UCP) - PORTUGAL
The College of Biotechnology (ESB), as a faculty of the Portuguese Catholic University, has been producing high-level research (http://www.esb.ucp.pt/CBQF/) and development and training in the biotechnology area for more than 20 years. As general features of the educational, scientific and cultural project of ESB, we point out the undergraduate and graduate courses (1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles) in the Biotechnology field; the courses related to the scientific research performed at ESB; and the various courses aimed at responding to the specific needs of the community. The search for knowledge through scientific research, technology transfer and the promotion of technology-based entrepreneurship, are complementary forms of ESB’s intervention in the society. The link between the scientific areas developed at ESB, mainly in the food and environmental sectors, and the interests and needs of the local community, is also important for ESB. ESB promotes transnational mobility of students and staff between ESB and an extensive number of international and national institutions (www.porto.ucp.pt/mri).
